26 JULY 2017 / Τhe Open Schools Program Completes its Activities for this Summer

For many residents of the Greek capital, this year’s summer holidays had a special destination: the Open Schools of the Municipality of Athens. This summer, the Municipality’s innovative program, which is implemented with the exclusive support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation in collaboration with Athens Partnership, became one of the city residents’ favorite meeting points, breaking a record of participations, with more than 3,000 beneficiaries crossing the gates of 12 school complexes, from Kypseli to Plaka, Petralona and Grava.

Children and adults, both residents and non-residents, embraced the program’s more than 40 free summer program activities, which included morning Summer Camps with creative activities for primary school children and evening recreational activities for adults.

The Mayor of Athens, Giorgos Kaminis visited the Open School of Kolonos, symbolically declaring the end of the summer programs and renewing the appointment with the city’s residents for the new school year. Mayor Kaminis thanked the Stavros Niarchos Foundation for its support and collaboration.

“The citizens of Athens embraced the Open Schools program of the Municipality of Athens for a variety of reasons, the main of which was the fact that people of all age groups meet, participate, exchange ideas in a familiar space, their neighborhood school,”  stated Mayor Kaminis.

Furthermore, in 2016, the same school complex began implementing another program, entitled Design for Better Learning, supported by the SNF, which included the maintenance of its building infrastructure and the enrichment of the school environment with elements that favor learning, inside and outside of the classroom.
