Τhe SNF announces its new cycle of grants

Oct 20, 2014
The Board of Directors of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, as part of the Foundation’s latest cycle of grants, have approved 88 new grants, totaling $ 35.13 million (€26.8 million), in support of non-profit organizations and programs, whose activities are expected to have a positive and lasting impact, both in Greece and internationally.

The 88 new grants are part of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation’s international philanthropic activity, and are aligned with the Foundation’s overall philosophy to support initiatives that can offer immediate assistance to our fellow citizens in need and also have the potential to bring about tangible changes and contribute to the long-term development of communities and their members. Many of these new grants are part of the Foundation’s three year €100 million initiative against the crisis in Greece, which has been completed, as well as part of the additional €100 million initiative aimed at addressing the high rate of youth unemployment and creating new opportunities for the country’s younger generations.

Andreas Dracopoulos, President of The Board of Directors of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, stated: “Through this new cycle of grants, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation bolsters its efforts in support of our fellow citizens who are trying to cope with today’s challenges, while at the same time supports the new generation, whose achievements will lead us all to a better tomorrow. We hope that these new grants, targeted yet multifaceted, will contribute, to the extent that they can, to the next secure and optimistic step.”

The 88 news grants which were approved pertain to the Foundation’s four basic program areas: Arts and Culture, Education, Health and Sports, and Social Welfare.

Specifically:

•Arts and Culture

Taking into account that Arts and Culture can play a critical role in the social and economic prosperity of the entire country, as well as of the local community, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation approved 20 new grants in this area, totaling $8.9 million (€6.73 million), aimed at making arts easily accessible to the general public, promoting Greek art aboard, supporting creative collaborations between talented Greek and international artists, and disseminating Greek culture on a national and international level.

•Education

Taking into account the unique property of Education to build strong foundations for personal and social development, the Foundation approved 29 new grants in this area, totaling approximately $6.03 million (€4.58 million), to support the implementation of research and educational programs, establish scholarships, and provide educational institutions, both in Greece and internationally, with the necessary infrastructure.

•Health and Sports

Through the 16 new grants approved in the area of Health and Sports, totaling $13.32 million (€10.23 million), the Foundation’s main purpose is to help improve the health of citizens in need and, at the same time, offer the public with open access to comprehensive healthcare services. In addition, these new grants will support young athletes and help promote a healthier way of life, promoting sports to children living in remote areas.

•Social Welfare

With 23 new grants in the area of Social Welfare, totaling $6.92 million (€5.25 million), the Foundation supports organizations working to combat poverty, support vulnerable social groups as well as promote capacity building.
