The aim of the documentary is to present the Initiative’s impact on the broader Greek society, by showcasing real-life stories of people who received practical support in the midst of the crisis.
In January 2012, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation announced the Initiative against the Greek Crisis, a $130 million emergency program, in addition to its regular grantmaking activities. The aim of the Program was to contribute to the prevention and the alleviation of the adverse effects directly linked to the deepening crisis in Greece, and to strengthen social cohesion during this particularly difficult period.
Three years later, as part of the Initiative, a total amount of $130 million has been allocated through 220 grants, across the whole country, offering direct and efficient assistance to those who have been stricken the most by the social and economic challenges of the current crisis in Greece.
The documentary’s prescreening, produced by AVION films and directed by Thomas Kiaos, took place in Thessaloniki, as a significant number of the Initiative’s grants were directed to organizations operating in Northern Greece. The prescreening will be followed by a screening in Athens, on February 24, and then the documentary will be released online in Greek, as well as with English subtitles.
Upon completion of the Initiative against the Greek Crisis, the Foundation continues its grantmaking activities in the fields of Social Welfare, Health & Sports, Education and Arts & Culture, while simultaneously focusing its attention to a new initiative entitled Recharging the Youth, a program also totaling $130 million, which is aimed to combating the alarmingly high youth unemployment rate in Greece.
