Oct 09, 2014
On October 8th, the inauguration of the renovated Cardiothoracic Surgery Department of the General Hospital of Thessaloniki “G. Papanikolaou” took place, the renovation works of which were supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.

The SNF grant improved both the overall level of service of the unit and the functionality of the department by reorganizing the interior of the unit. The grant to General Hospital of Thessaloniki “G. Papanikolaou” was part of the Foundation’s €100 million initiative against the Greek crisis.

The Cardiothoracic Surgery Department of the General Hospital of Thessaloniki “G. Papanikolaou” was established in 1966, initially for lung diseases. As of 1983, it expanded its activities and now covers the whole spectrum of heart and thoracic diseases, both for pediatric and adult departments. The Department has full access to the main intensive care unit of the hospital and, since 2012, has been officially certified by the National Transplant Organization as a specialized center for Heart and Lung Transplants.
